“Creativity expanded through creativity”

Gwalior Glory High School bags the Best Short Film Award at 6th Dada Saheb Phalke Film Festival organized by Education Expo.

Tackling emotions is an art to be learnt and practice that helps to emerge as a better person, a successful human being and a peaceful mind leading to good health. Specially when it comes to adolescent issues, parents need to lend a helping hand and that will be possible only when there is a transparent communication. Based on these vital issues, a film on adolescent issues ‘Ehsaas’ made by team of Glorians- Somil Goyal, Riddhi Jain, Vaishnavi Ghatge, Ruchika Singh, Priyanshi Gupta, Yash Kohli and Shiva Sharma, won the Best Short Film Award in School Student’s Category at 6th Dada Saheb Phalke Film Festival organized by Education Expo.

Priyanshi Parmar, Yashovardhan Jain and Yamini Tiwari received the award in the event organized in Alipur- Delhi. The team was accompanied by Mr.Sushil Kashyap and Ms. Vishakha Nigam as mentor teachers. Films from Argentina, Australia, America, Nepal, China, Spain, Italy and other countries were also screened in the festival.

The management, principal and staff have congratulated the team on the glorious achievement.
Aggression, behavioural change, inability to cope with temper - the areas if not addressed  appropriately will lead to various health problems. Bullying also leads to multifaceted problems which may reflect badly on the psyche of the students. Depression, frustration, anger are all traits which need to be vented out but in a positive manner, in a way that will propel the strength of an individual in the correct direction. ‘Bad Anger’ is harmful and one needs to practice to control it whereas ‘Good Anger’ acts as a factor to excel.

Experts during adolescent counselling session stress on adapting the ‘Turtle Approach’ that emphasizes to relax, thinking about the situation and coming up with the best approach rather than instantly reacting to a difficult situation. Also, analysing a situation from the point of view of the parents also helps to settle the agitation within in case of any disagreement on any issue with them.

“Forums like this help to share, ask, know and understand many essential aspects of growing up. Many a times we are not able to talk to our parents frankly about the hormonal urges, thankfully our queries are addressed in the counselling sessions” responded an adolescent after attending the session. What is your say??? Share with us on blog.

Launching of Kshitij – An initiative to help student pursue his field of interest…..

On 31st March 2016 , ‘Kshitij ’an unique endeavor was launched by Gwalior Glory High School. The occasion was Reports Day and the event was graced by the presence of Dr.Sunil Joshi, renowned psychiatrist of the city,  as Chief Guest and Shri Adarsh Katiyar,  IG Gwalior –Chambal region as Guest of Honour.

The institution has always believed that interest lights a fire within and motivates to learn more and do more. Genuine interest also keeps one fueled when putting in efforts to succeed. The skills as per the particular interest can be developed to take up the stream of study and shape up career accordingly. With prospects  available in  ample in the professional realm, it is always advisable that parents should encourage their child to pursue studies in the field that interests him / her and not to impose their wish when it comes to opting for the major subjects in the Senior Secondary Level.

To help the young learners assess their field of interest , a Standardized Interest Test was administered on every student of class VI  and the result was analyzed meticulously for identifying two fields that interest the child the most. A compiled handout was provided to each and every student’s parents of class VI comprising of outline of a career path that suits the field of interest with additional information of the esteemed institutes related to the particular course of study  so that the identified specific interest can be transformed into creating vision to explore new arenas and apply them in new and different ways.

“To have a successful career, it is very important that the profession chosen by an individual is of interest otherwise frustration seeps in leading to stress and dissatisfaction. The individual who knows his / her own aptitudes, and their relative strengths, chooses more intelligently among the world's host of opportunities. No aptitude can unfold and grow without appropriate interests, motivation and temperament ” quoted the chief guest while addressing the parents.

The Principal gave cognizance about the vision behind Kshitij saying “Interest can change in the course of time , depending upon the opportunities and knowledge provided to nurture the potential in the particular direction, but given ample learning space can work wonders”

The unveiling of the initiative was followed by Felicitation Ceremony of the students for their scholastic excellence in the session 2015-16 by the Director of the school. The venture of providing a line of thought regarding career to the Middle School students by implementing Kshitij in action adds on to the institution’s objective of inculcating ‘Care Capacity Capability’ according to the skill of the student emphasizing on the qualities each and every individual has.

The Interest Test will be administered on students of classes VII,VIII and IX also so that by the end of class IX  the interest can  be honed and  aptitude towards the career path in the field of interest can be developed.

Encourage, Enhance, Empower through Quality Concepts

“The quality of life is more important than mere presence of life itself”

The concepts formulated by Total Quality Management (TQM) founder, W. Edwards Deming, have long been suggested as a basis for achieving excellence in schools. It is an opportunity to conceptualize a systematic change for schools.  This is necessary because schools are the temples of young minds who will one day form the future of our nation and training them to solve problems is a priority.

Gwalior Glory High School located at Shivpuri-Link Road, Gwalior is an ISO 9001: 2008 certified school which has followed the path of TQM by applying various Quality Management Practices(QMS) which makes this school one of the most quality conscious schools in the entire city, state and even country.

Today, as it vies for the position of a SmartSchool, mere academics with computer education is simply not enough.  However, the various quality circles running in the school which take up problems in the school campus and try to find solutions for the same, show great promise to develop the overall personality of students by encouraging their problem solving abilities, enhancing their showcasing skills and empowering their creativity to make a positive impact on their peers.

What exactly is a quality circle? A Student Quality Circle (SQC) is a co-curricular activity in which small student/teacher groups form quality circles within the  regular co-curricular course in the school. A quality circle can be defined as :-

a small group of students of same educational institute
who meet regularly in their study place for a particular period
to identify, analyze and solve problems
occurring in their schools or at home
using systematic problem solving tools and techniques
     for their personality development.

The objectives of Quality circles are multi-faceted:-

   1.    Change in attitude              :  From “I don’t care” to “I do care”

   2.    Self development                :  Bring out ‘Hidden Potential’ of people

   3.   Development of team spirit:  Individual Vs Team spirit –“I could not do but we did it”

   4.    Total involvement of people at all levels    :Higher motivational levels

There are several reasons why we should have Quality Circles in schools.  Not only is it beneficial to the organization, it is also very beneficial to the participating individual. After all, the main goal of forming a Quality Circle is “Self and Mutual Development”. Quality circles help us to identify problems in the work place, improve work/study environment, eliminate overlap, increase efficiency, reduce completion time of tasks,  create a positive attitude and bring out hidden potential of members.  It also reduces overall costs.

Similarly it is very useful to every team member as he/she learns presentation skills, teamwork, has increased awareness about problems, learns the solution oriented approach, creates satisfaction at being involved in the decision making, increases self confidence, creativity, learns social responsibilities time management skills, scientific  and presentation skills.

Employees in Industrial QCs try to prioritize the problems on the process, working environment and products, whereas, students look for problems they are facing due to their own faults. The purpose of implementing Quality Circles is to develop the personality of students and not just solving problems. The nature of problems taken up by students may be very simple or having some level of difficulty, but always within their own domain, i.e. not entering the domains of teachers or management.

There are several local, national and international forums that help us showcase our problem solving skills to the world, as well as to gain implementable solutions from hundreds of such people showcasing theirs.  The National Convention of Quality Circles (NCQC), National Convention of School Quality Circle Concepts(NCSQCC), International Convention of Quality Circle Concepts (ICQCC) and International Convention of School Quality Circle Concepts (ICSQCC) are some such forums.  Gwalior Glory High School has been participating in many of these conventions since 2008 and has won several awards and appreciation for its case studies.

Quality Circles lead to a Quality Education and as Audrey Hepburn said:-

“A quality education has the power to transform societies in a single generation, provide children with the protection they need from the hazards of poverty, labor exploitation and disease, and given them the knowledge, skills, and confidence to reach their full potential.”

Women Empowerment and Indian Society

                                                                                                                        -Mrs.Rajeshwari Sawant

‘There is no tool for development more effective than the empowerment of women’.

Women empowerment is not new to India. It has gained meaning in the current scenario because of the atrocities meted out to women in Indian society. If we go back in history and observe the role of women, we see that women had a vital role to play in the decision making process of all important matters related to polity, religion, socio-economic and cultural fields.

Women were equally respected in society and they had their roles carved out other than managing household chores. One important factor that contributed to the women’s important role in society was the JOINT FAMILY SYSTEM.

JOINT FAMILY SYSTEM

In India, the joint family system had a very strong significance in moulding the social norms. Children were oriented towards a strong value-based culture right from the beginning. In case of any digression from the norms, there was someone or the other in the family to check the children and rectify their mistakes. Morality was its highest and everyone in the family respected each other. The head of the family had made it customary to make the women folk responsible for taking decisions on certain matters such as finance, where they were to manage income and expenditure, stock the granary, employ farm hands, etc. there was great regard for all women and each of their roles was specified. Hence, there were no disputes within the family. All worked in unison towards the betterment of life in particular and society in general. Children learnt to emulate the qualities of the elders and because of this, elders were careful not to behave in a manner which would be copied by the children. Hence, use of abusive or disrespectful language, physical harassment of any sort, ill habits that were harmful to society or aggressive behaviour towards members of society was not seen. This led to a harmonious society that worked towards a common goal – the enrichment of life through spiritual, emotional, social and cultural well-being. Religious festivals were celebrated in the family and also as social get-togethers because of which people learnt social skills, sharing of resources, working towards the success of an event and also culturally enriching their lives. Rituals were performed with the intention of purifying the soul and also the sacred chants that were uttered to sanctify the soul that had erred had a strong bearing on the minds of the young, who were conditioned to behave properly and conform to the norms of society. The diet of the family was well taken care of because of which illnesses were rarely found in homes.

The delineation of the joint family system into nuclear families has weaned away the importance of women in the running of the house like well oiled wheels of the cart. Since the woman of the house also is working, the running of the house depends on the maids. Food is cooked without love, household chore are more dependent on machines, there is no warmth in the house when children reach home because of which they become media dependent and resort to internet surfing, TV watching, chatting with or texting to friends on the phone, etc. The end result leads to children getting exposed to the wrong influences in society.

SENSITIVITY TOWARDS WOMEN

The upbringing of children at home also plays an important role in developing the mind set of children. There are different rules for boys and different rules for girls. Boys are allowed to stay out of homes for longer duration where as girls are asked to be back home before it gets dark. Conditioning of girls along with boys will bring about a sea change in the behavioural patterns of boys. When boys come back home in time, the chance of them getting into wrong company is lesser and hence the negative elements in society will get reduced. Moreover, right from the beginning, if boys are taught to respect women irrespective of caste or creed, the perspective of looking at women in a wrong way will change. Just as a boy at home is taught to respect his sister and protect her, so should he be towards all girls and women in society. The onus lies with the family to groom the boys to think positively about women and respect and safeguard women. Since women also are into plush jobs which may be private in nature, they may have to devote late hours to work because of which they may return home late. But the anti-social elements of society who have a narrow mind set think that such women are easily available for carnal favours, which is wrong. Hence, we need to teach the boys that they need to respect women and only then will society develop healthily and the GDP will be at a high.

STRONG ENFORCEMENT OF LAW

The law of the land should be very strong and binding. A man who metes out atrocities towards women should be viewed seriously. They should be penalized for the act they have committed which should teach them a lesson not to dare to carry out such acts with women. There is need for amendments in law so that it is relevant to the current scenario. The police force should be given a free hand to exercise powers to punish the offender suitably. They should be put into remand homes, if found guilty and rehabilitated through counselling. Besides, empowerment of youth to work towards development of society is essential by creating jobs after educating them.

EDUCATION

Universal education will raise the human wellness index for which, besides the government, industries and other organizations must come forward in setting up education centres and generate interest in the people to channelize them into skill oriented training, so that once they complete their training, they will be ready to get employment or even begin providing service in their field of specialisation to society.

We live in a world where we are self-centric. The day society begins to think beyond the individual, we will be able to bring in a transformation in the thought process of the people where there is mutual respect for the people, who will live in harmony and hold women in high esteem.
